THANK YOU At the end of the lesson, one of the students always prayed. Once a brother fell asleep. His neighbour nudged him in the middle of the lesson and told him it was his turn to pray. The tired student got up and began to pray … HELGE HARTMANN / ULRICH STEIERT Quotes & anecdotes SHAPED FOR LIFE 23 The Federal Minister visits the Liebenzell Mission O Gerd Müller, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, visits the Liebenzell Mission and emphasises the importance of mission organisations for international cooperation. Prof. Dr. Helmuth Egelkraut writes the book, which is more than 500 pages long and very transparent, with the full support of the leadership of the mission. When Christians in Papua New Guinea spoke publicly about the Tambaran cult (in which ancestor spirits are worshipped) and revealed cult secrets in 1984, riots broke out. The district administrator, himself a follower of the Tambaran cult, had six Christians and two members of an evangelism team arrested. They were taken to prison in Ambunti. However, the government boat was followed by a long convoy of dugout canoes with 50 Apelatak Christians who also wanted to be imprisoned for Jesus Christ. This had never happened to the government official before, and he was completely dumbfounded that anyone would voluntarily go to prison. He was so unsettled that he sent the whole group of Christians home again the next day. The gospel then made its way, and we could only marvel and give thanks. HEINZPETER HEMPELMANN TO ONE OF HIS STUDENTS After finishing school, I attended the Liebenzell Mission’s Bible College from October 1999 to March 2000. I regularly took part in the morning devotion in the mission house before class, which was organised by lecturers or seminary students. One morning, the devotion left a lasting impression on me: among other things, it was about a student who had learnt from a friend the habit of beginning every prayer with “Thank you ...”. He said that it does something to you and (re) sets your perspective. As soon as you start with thanks, you think of even more. It was so practical and easy to implement, and I decided to do the same from then on. 25 years later, I can say that it works and has helped me to keep a grateful heart! BIRGIT HARTMANN My time at the seminary was coming to an end and the mission leadership informed me that my future place of service would be in North Baden. However, I was supposed to have a car to serve there. That worried me a lot. How was I going to get a car? I had no financial reserves. With these stressful thoughts, I made my way back to my staff flat. There I found a note on my pillow with a telephone number that I should call the next day. This number told me that a master baker in Mannheim wanted to buy a new car and that the dealer was only offering him a very low price for his old one. He then decided not to sell his old car but to give it to someone in need. Overwhelmed by God’s care, I gladly accepted this offer. This “miracle car” served me well for another year and in the end I was even able to sell it to a scrap dealer for DM 50. ROLAND KOPF
